'Harry' Play in 9th Lifts Hoods High

June 5th, 2005

GCA Manager Stanley Jenkins gets the gate from crew cheif Dewey Scruwhaurd in the 9th after arguing a controversial play
CHILI, NY--

The day had finally arrived. The first day of the year where it finally felt like summer. Sunday Night Softball welcomed the hot and humid weather compared to the lousy weather in past weeks. Temperatures were close to the 90 degree mark with dew points in the 70's making it a hot a sticky one for the SNS players. "RNEWS clocked it at 89 degrees before I left my house" GCA's starting pitcher Frank Battaglia decleared before the first pitch of the game. The Hoodlums thinking they would be short on players, called basically the entire high school to come play as each team played 10-10 with three kids who were sent home.

The game got underway roughly around 4:40pm EDT with Frank Battaglia delivering the first pitch of the game in place of the ill Jason Hantes. The game was a low scoring affair through three innings of play with GCA on top 4-2. In the 4th inning, GCA put four homeruns on the board going ahead 10-3 where they would indeed look back.

Heading into the top of the 8th, Frank Battaglia pitched a great game allowing only 7 runs. GCA was ahead 13-7 at this point. A crutial dropped throw at first base by brother James Battglia led to a big inning by the Hoodlums. The Hoodlums fought back to make it a one run game heading into the top of the 9th trailing 13-12.

In the top of the 9th inning, the defense of GCA took a hike as they allowed a ten run inning off of abundance of fielding errors. Their defense let up 6 runs with no outs as the Hoodlums took the game under their control. One play in general fummed team GCA as a apparent tag was made during a run down at third base but after cockey, immature underclassmen called up from the minor leagues for the Hoodlums cried about "not being tagged", GCA let them have a run and not a out. After that, miss comunication in the outfield between Reynolds and Moose led to three more runs coming home which added insult to injury. In the bottom half of the inning, GCA tried to pull off another miracle as they did two weeks before but only could post five runs on the board and lost 22-18.

"It was a tough loss" Frank Battaglia said. "I pitched so well and to see them post a ten spot in the top of the 9th to take the lead was just heart breaking." Frank Battaglia ended his night with 8.1 IP, and 3-6 at the plate with a homerun. GCA team coach Andrew Reynolds was heated following the game. "I didn't think a few rotten little high schoolers could piss me off as much as they did today" Reynolds said to reporters. "I think our defense lost the game for us to be honest." Reynolds finished the night going 4-6 with 3HRs and a triple.

Tim Story picked up his first career win. The Panchos Ranchos, now called Harry's Hoodlums had never won a game in Sunday Night Softball. Tim Story has pitched every game for his team and got his first win. "It finally feels good to win a game. I now know the feeling of being a SNS winner" Story commented. Tim Story had plenty of run support to earn his first win. "In the bottom of the 9th with that nine run lead, I knew I still had to concentrate and keep my mouth shut. I know what the GCA hitters can and have done in the past. I knew they would slowly chip away at our 9 run lead."

Chris Scarbrough made a Sports Center highlight reel catch in left field during the game taking back a Andy Perrone homerun. A full extentended reach over the fense, almost falling over the fense, kept the game close. "I have never seen a ball carry that much" Scarbrough said. "Good thing I didn't have to pee, or else it would have all came out when I crashed into the fense" he said giggling.

There may not be a game next Sunday as a few Hoodlums are taking a vacation. Any developments will be posted on the SNS homepage.

Final: Harry's Hoodlems- 22 GCA- 18
